Mat Pilates

Why Mat Pilates Belongs In Your Practice

As we head into February, you might notice something new on our schedule at Orofino Wellness: more Mat Pilates classes.

That shift is intentional, and rooted deeply in the philosophy of Pilates itself.

If you’ve never taken a Mat class (or have been avoiding it), let’s talk about why Mat Pilates classes aren’t just an add-on, but a critical part of a strong, sustainable Pilates practice.

Pilates Was Created as a System, Not Just Reformer

Joseph Pilates didn’t create Pilates as a reformer-only method or a specific teaching style. He created it as a system designed to improve how the body functions as a whole.

That system included:

  • Mat

  • Reformer

  • Cadillac

  • Chair

  • Barrel

Each piece served a purpose, and none were meant to be used in isolation.

In early Pilates studios, and in some traditional studios today, all of this equipment was used together. Not in large group classes, but more like stations in a gym, where each apparatus supported different movement patterns and challenges.

And through all of it, the Mat was always present.

Why Mat Pilates Classes Are Foundational

Despite the innovation of Pilates equipment, Joseph Pilates never stopped teaching on the Mat.

Mat Pilates classes were always foundational because they require you to:

  • Support your own body without assistance

  • Build strength without springs

  • Develop body awareness and control from the inside out

The equipment helps prepare you for the Mat, and the Mat sharpens what you do on the equipment.

Some exercises feel harder on the Mat. Others are more challenging on the Chair or Reformer. Each version teaches you something different, and together they create a smarter, more connected practice.

How Mat Pilates Classes Improve Your Overall Practice

When you consistently include Mat Pilates classes alongside Reformer and Tower sessions, you may notice:

  • Better core control

  • Increased confidence in movement

  • Stronger transitions and coordination

  • A deeper understanding of Pilates principles

Each modality informs the others. Nothing exists in a vacuum.

How to Build a Balanced Pilates Schedule

As you plan your classes moving forward, we encourage you to explore all that Pilates has to offer:

Try to fit in each modality we currently offer at least once a month. Play with your schedule. Stay curious.

Your body and your Pilates practice will be stronger for it.
