A Real-Life Reminder of Healing Exercise
Change happens through movement and movement heals.” — Joseph Pilates
I got a little taste of why Joseph Pilates invented the Pilates equipment this week.
Danilo (my husband) was in the hospital with an intestinal blockage. Before you worry, he’s okay now. He got back home on Friday.
His big goal during his stay was to let things go through his system, ya know, promoting a good ol’ BM so that he could hopefully go home without surgery.
So what did we do? We moved.
Sometimes the most powerful healing exercise is the simplest kind of movement.
He walked the small circle of our General Surgery hospital ward over and over and over again.
As he lay in bed, I held each leg, gently bending and extending them (hello, single leg extension). As that got more comfortable, we moved on to single leg circles, double leg extension, and single leg straight stretch.
While I was physically assisting him through the exercises, I thought about the springs and pulleys on our Pilates equipment.
I imagined Joe getting tired of lifting people’s legs up. (If you don’t know the story, he rehabbed soldiers in an internment camp during WWI.)
I thought about how the idea must have come to him after lifting one too many legs. And I fell in love with this system and method of movement all over again.
Pilates Is Healing Exercise for Every Body
This is why Pilates is such a powerful form of healing exercise.
It’s for literally everyone.
It’s for the people just starting to move.
It’s for the elite athlete.
It’s for my hubby trying to get his bowels moving.
That’s the beauty of Pilates.
It meets you exactly where you are.

Healing exercise doesn’t have to be intense.
Sometimes it’s gentle.
Sometimes it’s slow.
Sometimes it’s simply choosing to move when your body needs it most.

Movement can literally heal you.
I saw it this week.
