The Reality of Body Image

I was at a 6 year old’s birthday party this morning. It was a pool party.

I complimented one of the girls on her swimsuit. It was so cute, a colorful one piece with a little cut out in the front.

After I complimented her, her mom told me that she feels self-conscious in it. That showing her belly, even just a little bit, makes her feel uncomfortable.

And it took me back to that age. When I first began to feel uneasy in my body. Around how much skin I was allowed to show based on how flat my stomach was.

There are truths about how the world perceives you based on your body size. There is a bias. There is a judgment. We feel it from a young age.

And that’s exactly why body confidence work matters, not just in the gym or the studio, but in the way we talk to ourselves and the spaces we choose to be in.

And Here’s What We’re Doing About It

One of our main missions at Orofino Wellness is to create a space where people can move in their current body, and eventually, just maybe, find peace in that body regardless of whether it changes or not.

That doesn’t make body stuff not hard. It’s just that we hope coming to us helps you shift the perspective away from something being wrong with you, or your body being something that needs to be fixed.

(You can work on your health without focusing on body changes, btw.)

What a Consistent Pilates Practice Can Do

Body confidence Pilates isn’t about what you can lift or how you look in the mirror. It’s about what happens when you show up consistently, around people who value you for more than what your body looks like or what it can do.

Through a consistent Pilates practice, you can start to move toward exercising for all of the reasons that make you feel well and more resilient. You can start appreciating your bodysuit more for what it does and endures versus what it looks like in a swimsuit.

And then, having the confidence to show up in the swimsuit. Able to wear it because you think it’s cute and you are allowed to wear cute things. Able to show as much or as little skin as you please, because that’s how you want to show up that day.
